How long does makeup last?

I just finished reading my friend's note about her new acquisition: MAC makeup, apparently her first collection. Good choice! I have been using MAC makeup for some time now, especially the MAC Studio Fix foundation.

MAC has recently released the Hello Kitty Collection which literally flew off the shelves, most of it were sold out on the first week of release. I was bankrupt and didn't really get the chance to get some for myself. It's hard to be unemployed, you'll never know when resources will be available. Mahirap maging maluho ang taong walang trabaho diba? I bet MAC would replenish the sold out ones naman, sayang ang benta eh. I heard the red lipstick from that collection is nice daw, I love bloody red "pokpok" lipstick, classic eh!

Besides, I have tons of makeup, most of it I bought out of impulse, gusto ko kase madami akong makeup kahit wala lang. Everytime I would tell my Mom I want a certain brand, she would ask me why I need to buy new makeup when all I do is stay home the whole day and cook. I mean, do I really need to put on mascara when I bake cookies?

She has a point diba? Still, nakakabili pa rin ako. Nice! Until it dawned on me, sa dami ng makeup ko, do I really get to use all of them? How long has it been since I bought them or last used them? Does makeup, like food, have an expiration date. Naalala ko, yes meron nga!

I know my friend will be posting a note about this topic soon but I got worried after I read her note and I had to make sure that my makeup is still okay to use. Mahirap na magka-kuliti the next time I use my mascara or baka the reason I am having breakouts ay dahil "panis" na ang makeup ko? Bwahahahaha!

I found out through GOOGLE that:

Cream Based- 6 months
Powder Based- 18 months
Mascara- 3 months
Lipstick- 12 months
Applicators- 4 Weeks

Mascara - Mascara should be replaced every three months, no matter how it smells. Never share your mascara with ANYONE! Repeat. NEVER SHARE YOUR MASCARA WITH ANYONE! People have gotten eye infections this way - it's not pretty! Also, never "pump" your mascara - you're just pumping air into the chamber, which dries it out faster.

Eye and Lip Pencils - Don't share these either (actually its a good rule of thumb not to share makeup at all!) Keep up to three years - sharpen often and toss if they become smelly or crumbly.

Lipstick and gloss - Once again, no sharing! Will last up to two years but the "stay-on" formulas dry out quicker.

Powder cosmetics (like blush, eyeshadow) - Up to 18 months, but toss if its cakey, stinky or you can't pick up color.

Foundation - This depends a lot on the product. If it's water-based, toss after a year. Oil based, about a year. If it has SPF in it though, it has a shorter shelf life so no longer than a year. Once again toss if stinky.

MAKE-UP DOS
Washing your hands before applying.
Not sharing makeup.
Not adding water or saliva to dilute makeup. (LAWAY TO DILUTE MAKEUP? YUCK!)
Keeping cosmetics in a dry area, away from direct heat or sunlight.

If you're still unsure about a product, here are some warning signs that will tell you if it has expired:
The product's smell has changed. (AMOY PANIS NA MAKEUP?)
It has been exposed to prolonged heat.
There is an obvious colour or textural change.
Mould is evident. (WOULD YOU PUT AMAG ON YOUR FACE?)

Nadepress ako... I mean with all the makeup I have, nililipasan na ng panahon at hindi ko pa nagagamit. That is just sad!

I value my things, especially my makeup collection. I wash my brush as often as I can with mild facial cleanser (take note, Clinique ito which I got for free) just to make sure tumagal siya and hindi pamahayan ng bacteria. What a waste of money if I just let it sit there, not use it, only to find out one day that it's expired na.

So I was thinking, why don't I put makeup EVERYDAY kahit na nagpiprito lang ako ng itlog sa umaga or nagluluto ng sinigang sa tanghalian?
